Great Saint Martin’s špelancija

Martinjski’ customs and traditions following ‘Križevci statute’ and ‘Koprivnica regulations’ for merry societies in the vineyards and restaurants have a long history. Great Saint Martin špelancija is a meeting of about thirty "martinjski bishops" from the whole of Croatia. They will elect the Grand Master of the Saint Martin ceremony, the first among equals, to whom they will hand over the seal and bishop's cap. In accordance with the unique ritual, at the end, they ‘baptize,’ or introduce, young wine into the wine and issue the owner a "christening certificate" as proof that the "pagan" musts passed into a fine glass of wine that people will be happy to drink. In addition to the rituals, visitors can enjoy a good glass of wine when offered at the tasting by eminent winemakers from Croatia, abroad and from the winemakers’ association.
